Step 2: Integrated Design Process Session

This full-day workshop should take place a minimum of 4 weeks following the Visioning Session. At this session a team of experts will explore possible design improvements to the building in a risk-free environment. Bringing professionals into the process earlier, you can help avoid costly changes later.

The IDP Session team includes:

  • The Enbridge Savings by Design program team
  • An IDP Session facilitator from Sustainable Buildings Canada
  • Energy modellers
  • Sustainable building experts
  • Design experts from fields such as lighting, HVAC, storm water management, and planning
  • Additional experts as identified during the Visioning Session

How it works

Following an introduction and sharing of goals, two groups are typically formed. The first looks at improving energy performance. The second addresses other sustainability priorities identified in the Visioning Session. Throughout the day, results are presented.

What to prepare
Builders/Developers are asked to do a preliminary presentation on the project context including the following information:
  • General building details: location, size, uses
  • Typical construction details from your current practice: envelope, HVAC, lighting, water
  • Project market positioning/or user profile
  • Corporate sustainability strategy/objectives
  • Photos or renderings of the project or project site
Who should attend
In addition to the project lead, you should bring a number of development team members from areas that may include:
  • Architecture
  • Mechanical Design
  • Construction Management
  • Specification
  • Sustainability
  • Interior Design
  • Planning
  • Energy Modeling
  • Project Decision Makers
What happens next

Using construction drawings, Sustainable Buildings Canada will develop these two energy models of your building:

  • Reference Energy Model: Meeting the minimum energy requirements of the 2017 Building Code with SB-10.
  • Baseline Energy Model: Your building's estimated energy use based on your preliminary design.

Throughout the Integrated Design Workshop, your team will work with the SBD experts to explore alternative opportunities to save energy and meet the goals of the program. An SBD energy model will be developed at the workshop and include a final report summarizing all discussions, alternatives and recommendations brought forward.
